"Dragon Boy" a solo exhibit featuring the works of Martin Hsu

Opening this Saturday, January 14th is a solo exhibit featuring the works of Martin Hsu titled "Dragon Boy".

Dragon Boy, a series of paintings depicting the adventures of a boy in dragon suit on his way to find his roots in a foreign land. With his kirin dog, Blackie by his side, they travel between reality and fantasy. They fly over the tallest of mountains and dive into the deepest of rivers while making new friends with magical creatures of all kinds. Dragon Boy aims to remind everyone to never forget the joy of being a kid, flying high, and smiling big!

Martin will also be debuting the "Dragon Boy" Designer Toy Prototype that evening.

Here's a little info about Martin Hsu:

Martin Hsu is not a dragon, but a horse. Though he has many great dragons in his family who have inspired him tremendously. Dragon Boy is special and dear to Martin as he often imagines about flying over the Yellow River with his childhood dog, Blackie. He hopes Dragon Boy brings joy and happiness to kids of all ages including the one that lives in you.

Martin currently paints and dreams in San Francisco

"Dragon Boy" opens this Saturday January 14th from 7 - 10 pm and will continue to be on display until February 4th, 2012.

We thank our customers, both locally and online, all of the blog sites that continually support us by promoting all of our events and releases, all of the artists that we have had a pleasure to work with this year and in the future, and especially all of our friends and ToyFam. We truly couldn’t have had a banner year without all of you! We thank you all for each opportunity that we were given and only look forward to what 2012 has in store for Dragatomi.

This show will feature new paintings which will coincide with unveiling Bigfoot’s newest figure: “Fujisan”

With the success of his previous Bigfoot figure in 2004 by StrangeCo, Dragatomi would like to introduce Bigfoot’s most recent figure – “Fujisan”. There will be a limited amount of hand painted resin Fujisan figures which measures approx. 8.5” tall by 7” and sculpted by Brin Berliner. A production vinyl Fujisan figure produced by Dragatomi, is scheduled to be released Summer 2012

"And I'd Like to Thank..." A solo Exhibit featuring Phillip Lumbang

Raised in the suburbs of Sacramento - Television was Phillip Lumbang's "profession". All things entertaining seen on T.V. augmented his imagination. He acquired a collective of popular characters that helped flourish his creativity. Like all childhood experiences, these characters from shows resonate with him to this day. Growing up into a teenager my interests developed and a fondness to music with it. MF Doom and David Bowie are among the ones that hold quality to him. Everyday new icons come into his life and affect his creative drive. This show is a tribute to his influences.

"This exhibition is a "thank you" speech recreated into an art show. I want to thank all of these individual characters in there own respects because they have given me so much inspiration throughout the years. No, I'm not thanking my parents or my agent, this show is a homage to all the cartoon characters, musicians and pop icons that have motivated me to peruse my passion in the arts. My trademark character known as "Awesome Bear" is dressed up as my cultural heroes of yesterday and today. Using spray paint and acrylic i further develop my Awesome Bears character's shape and form, pushing and pulling to create a perfect balance of what is my own idea and what is iconic about my inspirational heroes. I want my audience to understand how i developed such an iconic style with the influence i re-appropriate. This show is very near and dear to my heart, and it is also very important that I am having this show here in Sacramento where i grew up and developed an interest in most of the heroes i am portraying. Get ready to see my bear and many cultural icons like you have never seen them before." - Phillip Lumbang

Greetings from Hell - Drilone Solo Exhibit

Drilone and Dragatomi would like to bid you “Greetings from Hell” A solo exhibit of the same title.

As an artist, Drilone has mastered the art of elemental wear and corrosion to the point that you question, “How did you do that?” Although he is not the first to master this style, Mother Nature is also proficient at this, but the difference is, what takes Mother Nature 20 years to do, Drilone can perform in a matter of days.

Drilone is not afraid to apply his skilled technique to any type of platform, from vinyl to wood, to just about any type of material. Someone once told him that titanium doesn’t rust, and his response to that was neither does plastic or vinyl.

DrilOne has pulled out all the stops for his upcoming solo show . His works will feature his rusty style on several different platforms - from 3” and 8” Dunnys, to a 16” Custom Toyer Qee, to a custom antique inspired sign to even a vintage radio. So many awesome pieces will be available!!

Gold Life Dunny Series Release Info

The Gold Life Dunny Series and Gold Life Kabuki and Kitsune 2 pack 3" Dunnys by Huck Gee will go on sale at 11 am, Thursday, September 1^st.

Due to the limited nature of this series, we will not have an online release. They will be released for sale in-store starting at 11 am. We apologize in advance to our online customers, but we wanted to make sure that our local supporters were able to get in on these.

There is a 16 pc limit for the Gold Life Series– which means, if you purchase a full case, you are not able to purchase any additional pieces except for the 2 pack. For the Gold Life Kabuki and Kitsune 2 pack – there is a limit of 1 per person. We hate to do this, but we need to make sure that there will be enough for everyone that comes to the release.

If at the end of the day, there are any available cases/pieces, they will be put online starting at 9 pm PST on Thursday Sept. 1^st.

Contemporary Conflagrations - Leecifer Solo Show

One of the original “Toy Scene” customizers Leecifer’s vibrant color applications and universally recognizable signature style can be seen on literally hundreds and hundreds of pieces world wide. Known for tackling common platforms to the rarest of vinyl grails with equal relish Leecifer’s signature technique can be seen to flourish whether engaged in a heavy sculptural modification or a true to form paint scheme. Humble and irreverent in the same breath he has been known to champion the toys of Super7, Strangeco, and Kidrobot with a fervor only a fellow toy collector could understand. Having terrorized the sets of Jesse Hernandez’ “Vinyl Addiction”, George & Ayleen Gaspars “Toy Break” and the blogs of Spanky Stokes, Jeremy Brautman, Andy Heng, Brian Slivka as well as countless other publications, Dragatomi is pleased to present the work of Lee "Leecifer" Gajda as well as a limited release of the "Propane" Honoo in Dragatomi Blue. Opening June 11th 2011.

In case you've ever wondered about the Honoo, Lee's story of the Honoo goes something like this - initial concept was that if you told a fireside story about any of the Monster Family critters including the Honoo (Flame) that there was a very good chance that one would appear in the fire - playing, dancing, skating on a board of flame etc. (whatever you were into) to keep prospective night terrors, whether real or imagined at bay. Protector of children, both young and old, Honoo loves a good story, a mulled beverage (cocoa, hot chocolate, sake, and mead are enjoyed with equal relish) and a warm fire. Honoos also appear in a wide range of colors and sizes depending on the nature of the story that's being told, the time of year, and what's being burned. Simple chemicals like Strontium = Red, Calcium Chloride = Orange, Sodium Nitrate = Yellow, Barium = Green, Copper Sulfate = Turquoise, Copper Chloride = Blue, Potassium = Purple, and Magnesium = White etc all summon different hued Honoos. But the story makes a difference too as regular old wood, a few pages from a trashy romance or a tale told of romance and unrequited love in the month of February can summon different shades of pink (authors note - I've NEVER called a pink one, ok well mebbe' once or twice). In fact I'm fairly certain the magic in the air from various holidays will also effect to color of the spirit called.

Opening this Saturday, March 12th is a custom show featuring the Symbiote platform titled: " For the Love of Vinyl".

This is a collaborative group art toy show, displaying what the artists love to do, the way they want to do it,and how ever they wanted to do it, in this case the artists and designers had the opportunity to create their very unique vision, by encouraging them to use the technique, medium and theme of their choosing applying all their creative talent on a blank symbiote vinyl toy platform.

Up next for Dragatomi is a fantastic show exhibiting all new works titled "Safe From Harm - Short Stories by Lou Pimentel"

Through his latest show Lou Pimentel explores the feelings one may have when inhabiting new spaces alone and the feelings of isolation that may be involved. Being isolated is not necessarily a bad thing. When alone we have the opportunity to reflect on life and what we have been through.

These paintings are intended to bring the viewer into them and come up with their own conclusions. How do the protagonists feel about their situations? Are these creatures safe or in harms way?

This show opens on Saturday December 11th and runs until January 2nd 2011. The opening reception is on Saturday December 11th from 6-10 pm.

Skinner will be in attendance and we will release the piece at 1 pm where Skinner will be available at our booth for signing. There will be Hand Painted Editions as well as Unpainted Editions available.

The Beast is back in SAC!!

The Beast is Back in SAC!! That's right.... Artist Christopher Lee will be back in Sacramento.... for the opening of his new show that is.

This show will feature over 25 pieces of new work in all sizes which come together in this whimsical celebration of nostalgia, pop culture, typography and characters. Lee’s distinct style and use of color is playful exhibited in this open themed show.

So... if you're in or around the Sacramento Area, please stop by and check out all the new work! However, if you can't make it, don't worry the show runs until December 4th.

A little info about Christopher Lee:

Christopher Lee is a multi-disciplinary designer and illustrator of sorts who works under the moniker The Beast is Back. He is a Sacramento native and is a graduate from Sacramento State University and has a degree in graphic design. His entire life has revolved around drawing since he was old enough to hold a pencil.

Speaking of pencils...

The way he holds his pencil has often been referred to as “the claw”.

His favorite quote comes from Picasso as he states "Art washes away `sums up his personal philosophy.

In July of 2006, he moved to Southern California in search of new inspiration and surroundings. Since then he worked as an Art Director for the Sacramento grown street and skate culture magazine Vapors and from there switched gears and was recruited to the motion graphics studio, Buck, where he also worked as an Art Director.

In October of 2009, he said goodbye to Buck and decided to go rogue. He currently resides in Burbank and works as a full-time freelance illustrator for a variety of clientele including Target, Hasbro, Nike, Absolut, and Adobe.

In addition to his freelance work, he and his girlfriend continue to work on their growing greeting card and home decor brand The Birds & The Beasts.

We are from Fury Planet - Take us to your leader....

The invasion will make its way to Sacramento on Sept.11, as Fury Animals, and Mai Hiro, bring the Fury Planet to Dragatomi. Prepare yourself as worlds collide; Fury Animals will combine forces with Mai Hiro in order to bring you their latest collaborative and individual works as part of the Fury Planet show. This is the first time Fury Animals will exhibit their work in the U.S., so be sure to save the date for this momentous occasion.

This event will exhibit several new products from Fury Animals, including: tees, hoodies and iPhone cases. Fury Animals will also be bringing a prototype toy of their 12" Fury Bunny that is currently being produced by Soda Workshop.

Mai Hiro will also have some of their upcoming merchandise available, including iPhone cases, a Ninja Spiki plush keychain and tees with Fury Planet crossover designs.

Mai Hiro will also be displaying new work featuring Linda Le, who will also be making an appearance at the Fury Planet Show. Don't miss the opportunity to take a photo with her.

This exhibit showcases lots of talented artists doing pieces that aren’t vinyl. It will feature resin, wood, glass, metal, etc… You get the picture.

The next art show up at Dragatomi is - "I Like To Eat" a solo show featuring new works by toy customizer Motorbot.

This is an all Labbit show, but these aren't your regular everyday labbits, these all have been customized to to look like FOOD! How awesome is that?!? There will be many pieces showcased in this exhibit. There will be 10" Labbits, 5" Labbits and lots of 1.5" labbits.

It will feature lots of paintings on wood as well as kokeshi dolls. We're really excited to be featuring her art at our gallery which focuses on bright bold colors, with a Tokyo Pop feel to it with her characters showing many ranging emotions and having a kawaii feel all at the same time. Art for Wishes

Being that it's a brand new year, we here at Dragatomi would like to start it off right.

Our first event for 2010 is called "Art For Wishes" a charity event benefiting the Sacramento chapter of the Make a Wish Foundation. There will be custom mini munnys and mini canvases created by children of Artists. The children involved in this event are:

Alexa Dewitt (Grimsheep), Elliot and Aidan Olson (Motorbot), Arata and Akira Ketner (Smallandround) , Eliana and Vanessa Hernandez (Jesse Hernandez), Sophie “Mini Punch” Miller (UltraPunch), Elijah and Jonah Ross (Scribe), Isis and Izik Wheeler (Haseown), Isobel and Chloe (Drilone), and Kayla and Ryan Suavillo (Dragatomi).

Just wanted to let you all know that we will be hosting Dr. Sketchy's Roadshow on Thursday Nov. 12th @ 7 p.m.

This sounds like it would be a real fun event.

Here's a little information on Dr. Sketchy's:

Dragatomi is pleased to present “Rear Naked Choke,” a solo exhibition of new works by Patrick Francisco, a New York artist known as much for his promotional antics as for his painterly approach to canvas and vinyl toys.

Like the jiu jitsu maneuver, “Rear Naked Choke” is a roguish attack on the senses. Francisco shows the moody simian characters he’s become known for, but adds new explorations that are stylistically rooted in the former. Predominantly muted color schemes give way to a bolder alter ego that at once reveals the odd—even whimsical—dimensions of the sinister. He has created, according to illustrator Jarrod Gecek, “an amazing little world of chimps with a disdain for public decency.”

“Rear Naked Choke” features paintings, drawings, resin sculptures, and customized toys. Though spanning themes through different media, all pieces are bound together by the same intense grittiness of a tightly applied rear naked choke.

ABOUT PATRICK FRANCISCO

Patrick Francisco is known for bold brush work and innovative methods of promoting his art to the public. He has staged scavenger hunts of his custom painted toys in New York City and, with the help of blogger "Spanky" Stokes, in San Diego. Francisco has shown at a number of galleries, including C. Emerson Fine Arts (St. Petersburg, Florida), Agni Gallery (New York City), and 1:AM Gallery (San Francisco). Francisco received his BFA from SUNY FIT in New York City, and can be often found drawing in Spring Studio SoHo.

We will have a 2nd Saturday Opening and anticipate a great turnout. The show will run from Nov. 14th until Dec. 5th. Opening reception will be on November 14th at 7 p.m. Patrick will also be in attendance for the opening.

Just an update on Shop Wars that was Hosted by Delicious Drips and 1:AM Gallery SF last Friday.

Many local businesses entered and were given a blank Toy2R 8″ Qee as their canvas. Each participant customized their blank for the showcase voting exhibition, held on Friday September 25th at 1:AM gallery.

The event was great and helped raise money for Project Open Hand. There was also a 16" Blank Qee for everyone to customize while at the show.

The participating businesses were : Jake Diamond, Sidewalk Collective, Jay222 Toys, Sacred Tattoo, Bayfitted, Dragatomi, Secession Art and Gallery, Kidrobot, Neon Monster, FTW Tattoo, Precita Eyes Mural Arts, Delicious Drips, 1AM Gallery, Mary Beth Art, Painted Lady, Roschelle Buenaflur, Ryan Holt Design, and Infectious.

Hey Everybody! Just wanted to let you know that Dragatomi is entered in Shop Wars. A Charitable event by Delicious Drips and 1AM Gallery in San Francisco.

Shop Wars is a business-to-business custom toy contest that will allow some of the shops in the Bay Area to show off their custom toys which represent their stores. So, when I was invited to do this, I was stoked! The only problem was that I'm not an artist. So I quickly remedied that by calling our good friend Drilone and asked if he would be willing to represent our store for us. And, when he agreed, I entered the contest.

For those of you that will be in the area, stop by 1AM Gallery on Sept. 25th at 6pm to see the custom toy designed by Drilone for Dragatomi.

Dunny Series 2009 Pre-Release and Trading Party Update

Hi everyone! I know this is a little late, but still I would like to tell you all about our KidRobot Dunny Series 2009 Trading Party we had on Sept. 9th.

The event started promptly at 6 p.m. and we were greeted with a crowd that was ready for their new dunny series. We had a fun filled evening with raffle drawings through out the night which gave everyone a chance to win prizes from, tee shirts, blind boxes, headphonies and skate decks!

A BIG "Thank you" goes out to everyone who came through that evening.

Hi Everyone! I wanted to inform you that since we opened our doors back in May, we've never really formally had a "Grand Opening" so.... what better way to hold our opening event than to release our "Game of Death" exclusive Spiki figure by Nakanari and hold a Game of Death theme art show.

The G.O.D. Spiki figure is limited to 100 pieces and will retail for $75.00.

2009 SDCC

This year both Agent_R and I attended the 2009 SDCC and let me tell you….. we had a blast! For those of you that follow us on twitter, I hope you found that my tweets were quite entertaining. :) As we were pretty entertained ourselves.

We arrived just in time to attend the Preview night and saw what this year’s Comic-Con had to offer. If you’ve never attended Comic-Con before, it’s pretty overwhelming to see so many cool things under one roof. Lots of people dressed in Star Wars costumes, and dressed up as video game characters , and comic book heroes, and some I couldn’t really identify. Really, I think other than on Halloween, this is just another time you can wear pretty much any costume and not get questioned as to why you are in a costume.

But, people dressed up in costumes is not all that Comic-Con had to offer. This event brings some of the coolest exclusives only available there.

I do have to say though, that with all the awesomeness around us, the best part was getting to see and hangout with everyone. Many of whom we hadn’t seen for a long time, and some whom we just met and had a great time with. :)

Oh…. before I forget, I would like to give some shout outs: To “Vectar the Intolerable ” for hanging out with us and showing us a great evening. Also to Erick Scarecrow, George Gaspar and Spanky Stokes for rocking our "Run Dragatomi" Tee. Being that today is 2nd Saturday, we thought that it would be an awesome day to release it. It was designed by our very own XSPOSURE906 who is a very awesome and talented graphic designer.

He is a young aspiring artist who has been working with us for a couple of months now. When we first met him, we didn't realize the talent this 19 year old had. It's been awhile since either myself or Ray (Agent_R) has posted anything up on our blog lately. We've both been real busy with our new store that sometimes, we forget to update everyone with the happenings at Dragatomi.

I guess this is a late post also, but better late than never!

This past Sunday, May 31st, we were a participating vendor at Sacramento's Midfest - A fundraiser event for T&M Organization and the Marshall Park Foundation. The day was filled with lots of entertainment for the attendees. There were live bands, an urban art competition, and various fighting matches and lots of other things to see.

The turnout was great! With the weather cooperating (not being too hot!) there were lots of people to come out and support the Sacramento art scene. Our booth had a great turnout also. Lots of people stopped by and were so thrilled to know that they now have a local place to purchase all of their designer toys.

Dragatomi Store Opening Day!

First, I would like to apologize for kinda hiding out these last couple of weeks. Since we have acquired our new storefront, I was really focusing on just trying to get everything in order for our opening day. Only a couple of days ago, did I realize that we were just about ready to open.

Well, with that said, we would like to announce that our Opening day will be this Saturday, May 9th. Woo Hoo!!!! We will be opening just in time for Sacramento's 2nd Saturday Art Walk. To learn more about it, you can view a recent post that Ray put up a couple of months ago.

Our store is located in the Midtown section of Sacramento. Midtown is home to many art galleries, trendy urban boutiques, and great eateries! We didn't realize that Sacramento had such a following for the designer toy industry, until we started moving the toys in. Random passer bys would see and comment on the toys and kept wanting to know when we will be opening.

So, if any of you will be in the Sacramento area on Saturday, please stop by and check us out.

I.W.G. Humans Beware Opening Night

It was a nice, cool, and clear evening in the city by the bay. San Francisco April 10th, opening night of I.W.G. Humans Beware Custom Art Show at Rocketworld. The show featured so many amazing entries from artists all over the country orchestrated by none other than Drilone.

Jeremy from ToyCyte and Jesse Hernandez with his new show Vinyl Addiction was also there to cover the event. Making the drive straight from So Cal just for the show was Toy Break's Ayleen and George (you guys rock). Also in the house was Leecifer, Bert Gatchalian, Jenny Wolf, LeRoid, Fatima, and the StrangeCo. Crew. Joanne and I had a great time talking, hanging out and taking a bunch of pictures.

Rocketworld as big as it is, quickly filled up. Fans kept coming throughout the evening and it did not take long for the figures to start selling. The 1st sale of the show honors belongs to Grimsheep's Keneda and continued through the night. In addition to I.W.G., Rocketworld also houses T.A.D. Gear: an elite class adventure gear when only the best will do. All the figures from the show will be on display at Rocketworld until May 10th. Stop by if you can, and check out works from all these artists. Even though the pictures are nice, they must be viewed in person to fully see the detail in the figures. Big thanks to Patrick Ma and Drilone for letting us be part of the show as sponsors.

For those of you who know who / what Dragatomi is, you know that we are an online retailer for some of the coolest Designer toys. However.... we are pleased to announce that we will be opening a store in Sacramento soon! We will be receiving the keys to our new place located in Sacramento's Midtown area in a couple of weeks, then renovations begin. We are anticipating to be open either by late May or Early June. We couldn't have picked a better location in Sacramento to open our store. Midtown is home to many art galleries, trendy urban boutiques, and great eateries! It just felt that was where we needed to be.

We are real excited and can hardly wait until we are fully open for business! During this process we will still be available to order from online. We will keep everyone updated and maybe even post a few pictures.

2nd Saturday Art Walk

It's been a few days since I last checked in. This weekend was 2nd Saturday Art Walk in Sacramento. What's that you ask? Well on the second Saturday of each month, rain or shine, galleries in Sacramento around the J st. area stay open for an Art Walk late into the evening. People walk from gallery to gallery, viewing, experiencing and discovering local art galleries and meeting artists. In addition to art galleries most of the local clothing boutiques close late and offer live music and DJ's spinning in front of the stores.

One of these stores is Havoc Urban Boutique at 918 24th St. off of J St. We were lucky enough to meet it's owners Mary and Ricky. They were super cool and even though we just met them, they treated us like their Havoc family. Their store was very nice which features an art gallery in front which showcases works from local artists including a large custom piece from international known artist David Garibaldi. The rest of the store was a non-stop collection of the freshest threads from underground and independently owned brands. So when in Sac Town, don't forget to stop by the Havoc Boutique and get fitted with the latest gear.
